How we manage to listen to the voice of children

In our children’s home, we prioritise listening to and incorporating the views, wishes, and feelings of the children in our care. We create a supportive environment where children feel safe and valued, encouraging open communication and active participation in decisions that affect their lives. Regular one-on-one sessions with key workers provide a private and comfortable space for children to express their thoughts and feelings. These sessions are complemented by group meetings where children can discuss common issues, share ideas, and collectively make decisions about the home’s activities and rules. We ensure that children’s feedback is not only heard but also visibly acted upon, demonstrating respect for their perspectives and fostering a sense of ownership and responsibility.

Additionally, we use various tools and methods to capture the children’s voices effectively. This includes suggestion boxes, keywork sessions, regular surveys, and informal discussions during daily interactions. We also utilise creative methods like art and play therapy, particularly for younger children or those who may find verbal communication challenging. Our staff undergo regular training on person-centered approaches and active listening to ensure they are equipped to support and understand the children effectively. By involving children in care planning, reviewing their individual plans regularly, and making adjustments based on their input, we ensure their preferences and needs are central to their care. This comprehensive approach not only empowers children but also helps build their confidence and trust in the care system
